watching someone quit the internet in real time

my buddy derek is doing this thing where he’s stepping back from social media which would be fine except he’s posted about it like 9 times since tuesday. first it was the announcement post with the sunset photo. then the update about how he already feels more present. then another one about how he’s reading books again. bro you posted a picture of the book.

i get it though.

quitting something publicly is like the only way to make it feel real. when i tried to stop eating sugar i told everyone at the bar and they held me accountable for exactly zero days. but at least i wasn’t sending daily updates from outside the donut shop talking about how free i felt

funny thing is watching someone discover what everyone already knows. did you guys know you can just… walk around? yeah man. we know. we’ve been doing it while you were posting. derek’s out here acting like he invented looking at trees. yesterday he posted a video of himself journaling by hand. the caption was “analog only” which he typed on his phone.

in 2 weeks he’ll be back posting normally but with this vague superiority complex about his time away. he’ll drop little comments like when i was offline the same way people say when i lived in europe and honestly good for him. we all need our little lies.

i tried to do a digital detox once but i just ended up checking my email 400 times and reading wikipedia articles about serial killers. turns out my problem wasn’t the internet. it was me. derek’s gonna figure that out soon. probably around day 12 when he realizes nobody noticed he was gone except for the posts about being gone.

anyway he just shared a quote about presence. from his phone. while documenting his phone free journey. sometimes i think we’re all just stuck in the world’s dumbest loop and nobody wants to admit it.
