so my dad calls me yesterday.
he’s like “hey what’s this bitcoin thing your cousin is always posting about on facebook”.
and i was like oh yeah sure i can explain that.
which was immediately a mistake because the second i started talking i realized i have no idea what im actually saying.
like i know the words. blockchain. decentralized. digital wallet.
but putting them together in a way that makes sense to another human being?
apparently impossible.
i started with “ok so imagine money but its on the computer” and my dad goes “like my bank account” and i was like no not like that and then i couldnt explain why its different.
so then i tried the whole thing about how its not controlled by banks or governments and hes like “so who controls it” and i said “everyone” and he said “that sounds like no one controls it”.
and honestly he had a point.
then i got into mining and trying to explain how people use computers to solve math problems to make money and he just went quiet for like thirty seconds and said “that sounds like a pyramid scheme with extra steps.”
the worst part is i started doubting everything i thought i knew while i was talking.
like maybe it is just fancy gambling. maybe im the idiot here.
i spent the rest of the call trying to convince both of us that i understand economics but really i just buy things and hope the number goes up. my dad ended the conversation by saying “well it sounds complicated” which is dad speak for “my son is probably getting scammed but i love him anyway.”
anyway my cousin lost like two grand last month so maybe my dad was right to be confused.
